Technical Abstract: Resistance to sugar beet cyst nematode in sugarbeet has been elusive and very difficult to fix in a genetically stable manner. Resistance from wide crosses to Beta procumbens conditions near immunity to cyst nematode and has been extensively researched but has been little used because of this meiotic instability. Recently, moderate to high resistance to cyst nematode has been found in wild sea feet, B. vulgaris subsp. maritima, that is fully cross compatible with sugarbeet. Resistance genes from wild beet accessions have been backcrossed into sugarbeet populations. Two germplasm CN12 and CN72 were developed with nematode resistance and were released. CN12 and CN72 will provide breeders with sources of resistance to sugarbeet cyst nematode in enhanced sugarbeet populations.
