Technical Abstract: Obesity in children has increased dramatically. Information on how food choices have changed is needed by consumers and policymakers alike to develop strategies to reverse this phenomenon. Data from the Nationwide Food Consumption Survey 1977-78 and the What We Eat in America, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2002 were analyzed. Children’s diets showed overall increases in the intake of less nutrient-dense foods including soda, savory snack foods, pizza, and candy coupled with decreases in the intake of milk and most vegetables. These data provide important information about intake patterns useful in the development of nutritional guidance for children.
