Technical Abstract: Sugarbeet germplasm lines CN12 and CN72 were officially released on 02/28/05. These releases are multigerm, random-mated populations that segregate for resistance to sugarbeet cyst nematode from the wild species Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima. Cyst nematode is one of the most damaging pests of sugarbeet in the USA and world. Resistance in sugarbeet has not been discovered despite about 100 years of efforts. These wild beet sources of resistance introgressed into sugarbeet may become highly valued as new and unique sources of resistance. The inheritance and efficacy of this resistance is still being researched.
