Citation: Zhu, X., Kirkbride, J.H. Jr. 2005. Proposal to conserve the names ThermopsisLanceolata and Sophora Lupinoides with a conserved type (Leguminosae). Taxon. 55(4):1047-1049.

Interpretive Summary: Accurate scientific names of plants are essential for communication about them. The lanceolate bush-pea, an important Asian medicinal herb, has had the same scientific name, Thermopsis lanceolata, for more than 175 years. However, a recent discovery would require changing the scientific name by which this legume has been known. This proposal will save the scientific names of the lanceolate bush-pea and the kamchatkan bush-pea and prevent disruptions of their uses and research programs.

Technical Abstract: The scientific name Thermopsis lanceolata has been used for an important Asian medicinal herb for more than 175 years. It cannot continue to be used because it includes an earlier name, Sophora lupinoides, which should have been adopted. To conserve current usage, conservation of Thermopsis lanceolata and Sophora lupinoides with conserved types is proposed so that Thermopsis lanceolata can continue to be used for the Asian medicinal herb.
