Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This magnificent Studies in Mycology celebrates the one-hundred year anniversary of the founding of the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS) in the Netherlands. The two similar-but-different collages of photogenic microfungi are representative of the 51 articles contributed by the worldwide community of mycologists. The printing on high-quality paper is clear. The numerous illustrations are primarily black and white photographs with a few line drawings and at least thirty colored plates liberally sprinkled through both volumes adding to the majesty of this publication. The majority of the papers address the systematics of filametous ascomycetes and their anamorphs especially plant-associated microfungi. Not surprisingly, most papers describe new taxa and many of them include keys to genera. Seven papers concern non-ascomycetes including one very interesting paper on the history of CBS, one on global fungal biodiversity, a topic that this volume aptly illustrates, one on the new intiative MycoBank, two papers on true yeast fungi, one on an “accidental” basidiomycete, Helicomyxa everhartioides, one on Pythium/Phytophthora, and one on the Mucorales. Congratulations to those who edited these fifty-one papers and produced this high quality landmark issue. Judging by the volume and quality of the publication, the future for CBS appears bright!
