Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The increased participation of wheat to new biobased product markets is stimulated by the availability of surplus grain, declining exports, the development of new biobased products, and the creation of new ways to separate wheat into valuable platform chemicals. Novel separation technology developed specifically for wheat may facilitate greater utilization of wheat in both food and non-food markets for wheat components (starch, protein, gums, oils) and improve the ability of wheat platform chemicals to compete internationally. The technology is based on 'cold'-ethanol which is applied to enhance the capability to manage the displacement and extraction of wheat components and may facilitate entry of wheat as a resource or substrate for fuel ethanol. Gluten concentrates produced by this method have especially high quality. The poster presents a generalized overview of this effort at the Western Regional Research Center, USDA, ARS.
