Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Glycerol, a renewable raw material, is a firmly established component in many industrial products. It is obtained as a byproduct when vegetable oils and fats are hydrolyzed or esterified to yield fatty acids, metal salts (soaps), or their corresponding esters. The recent increase in biodiesel production has brought about concern regarding an oversupply of glycerol to the glycerol market. Therefore, the development of new chemicals and uses from glycerol are sought. Recently, our research has focused on the development of organic carbonate compounds derived from oleochemical materials such as glycerol and lipids, and the research presented will describe the dialkyl carbonate interchange reaction between diethyl carbonate, glycerol, and glycerol derivatives to produce compounds that contain the glycerol and carbonate functionalities. The synthesis, characterization, and physical properties of these compounds will be discussed. Work is currently underway to more fully examine the reactivity of these compounds and their potential industrial applications.
