Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Three genetically distinct fungal strains were found to commonly infect adult and pupal shore flies being cultivated in a Cornell University greenhouse. While two strains were very similar to indigenous strains commonly found in agricultural areas in the northeastern US, none resembled the only commercial mycoinsecticide currently being used in US greenhouses, suggesting that fungal epizootics developed naturally and not as a byproduct of sprays for pest control. All strains were extremely virulent, causing greater than 89% mortality of adult flies within 5 days of inoculation, suggesting these isolates may have potential for biological control of this pest.
