Tolerance of popular cotton varieties to the reniform nematode. Proceedings of the Beltwide Cotton Conferences. 2005. v. 1. p.150. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Thirty-three commercial cotton varieties were evaluated for tolerance to the reniform nematode in 2003 and 2004. Tolerance was measured by comparing nematode counts and seed cotton yields of each variety in untreated plots and plots treated with 3.5 gallons of Telone II per acre or 7.5 lb of Temik 15 G per acre. One experiment was established using a randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement of treatments with nematicide as one factor and cotton variety as the other. A second experiment utilized a split plot design with cotton variety as the main plot treatment and nematicide as the subplot treatment. Reniform nematode population densities were assessed at planting, midseason, and harvest. Varieties having significant differences in nematode counts at midseason and the lowest yield response to nematicide treatment were judged to be the most tolerant to the nematode. Varieties DP 436 RR, DP 555 BR, DP 5415 RR, FM 960 BR, FM 966, PM 1218 BR, SG 105, SG 215 BR, ST 4892 BR, and TX 28 BR had significant differences in reniform numbers at midseason and no significant differences in seed cotton yields in at least one trial. The following varieties had significant differences in nematode numbers at harvest and no significant differences in seed cotton yields in at least one trial: DP 449 BR, DP 555 BR, FM 960 BR, PM 1218 BR, PM 1560 BG, SG 125 BR, SG 501 BR, and ST 4892 BR. |
