Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) is one method which can be used for the sequestration of carbon dioxide and at the same time generate power. In this study the CLC concept is extended to hydrogen production using biomass as feedstock. A flowsheet of the concept is described whereby biomass is pyrolyzed into syngas which is, in turn, used as the reductant for a metal oxide reduction reaction. The reduced metal is oxidized by water to yield hydrogen. Part of the reduced metal can be oxidized by air to provide some of the heat requirements of the reduction or the gasification process. Using nickel and/or iron oxide as oxygen carriers a material and energy balance has shown that when the reduced metal is split into two streams of 50/50 weight percent, one stream can theoretically produce 16 percent hydrogen yield of the initial biomass mass. The other 50% can yield 22% of the heat required for the reduction reaction by metal combustion.
