Technical Abstract: Microarrays are a technology that allow scientists to monitor hundreds of thousands of genes in live animal experiments. This technology allows us to better understand how animals respond genetically to environmental stimulus and can help us develop improved management practices to increase the well-being and health of our livestock. Microarrays are generally very expensive and hard to design. We are developing bioinformatics (information biology) approaches to help design smaller, less expensive, and more targeted microarrrays. As part of this goal, we have also developed protocols including a Windows workstation .Net network Distributed BLAST protocol that allows us to search large genetic databases with large datasets much faster. This is vital because many such database searches can take up to a month to complete. By completing these database searches faster, we are able to speed progress toward development of targeted microarray technologies that can more efficiently and more rapidly help us develop better management practices for our livestock.
