Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were passively immunized with anti-Streptococcus whole serum (ASI) and normal whole serum (NWS) to determine the protective role of antibody to S. iniae. The ASI was obtained from tilapia actively immunized with virulent S. iniae. The immunized tilapia had 18% mortality and an anti-streptococcal antibody response. After these immunized tilapia were challenged, no further mortality occurred (100% survival) and an anamnestic antibody response was noted. The NWS was obtained from tilapia without antibody to S. iniae. The percent survival in tilapia passively immunized with ASI and NWS and challenged with S. iniae (IP injection) were 87 and 62%, respectively (P 0.05). Disease signs were only observed in the tilapia passively immunized witj NWS and non-immunized challenged controls. The results indicated that protective immunity against S. iniae is due to anti S. iniae antibody.
