Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cereal or tuber starches have been extruded into low density foam. Extruded starch foam tends to embrittle and have poor mechanical properties. We have extruded starch with cellulose fiber uniformly distributed throughout the starch matrix. Fiber reinforced foam has a greater density than foam made only of starch. The mechanical strength and resiliency of fiber reinforced foam was superior to that of foam without fiber.
