Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During the past year, outbreaks of avian influenza (AI) and Newcastle disease (ND) have occurred worldwide and will continue into the future. Future control strategies for AI and ND will utilize a blend of existing strategies and technologies plus the development and use of some new strategies and technologies. Such changes are being driven by multiple forces including consumer pressure for adoption of more animal welfare friendly control strategies, decrease in antibiotic use for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, changes in national and international regulations of disease definitions and control strategies, and emphasis on prevent of disease through improved environmental controls, better vaccines and biosecurity enhancements.
