Interpretive Summary: Nemestrinid flies (family Nemestrinidae) are found in North and Central America, and are parasites of grasshoppers and beetles. Some species are important to agriculture because they suppress pest grasshopper populations. The information contained in this publication summarizes the taxonomy of the species that occur in Mexico and Central America. A chapter in a comprehensive manual of the flies of Central America, this work will enable scientists, quarantine workers, veterinarians, and others concerned with flies to identify these insects. Technical Abstract: The family Nemestrinidae is reviewed at the generic level for Central America, based on literature reviews and original research. A key to the 4 genera that occur in Mexico and Central America is given. A synopsis of knowledge of the family is presented as well as identification aids, figures, and a summary of biology. |
