Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fats and oils are of interest as renewable raw materials for use by chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Functionalization of these materials to derive new oleochemicals could help to further expand the uses of fats and oils by these industries. Here we report on our work to prepare lipids containing the isoxazoline and isoxazole heterocycles. The isoxazole and isoxazoline ring systems have received much attention recently because of their herbicidal, insecticidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal activity. Additionally, both the isoxazoline and isoxazole ring systems are versatile synthetic intermediates, and ring opening reactions of the lipid compounds give new fatty compounds containing functionality such as b-amino-enones, 1,3-diketones, and b-hydroxy ketones. The lipid isoxazoles and isoxazolines and their ring-opened compounds can be prepared in moderate to good yields, may have potentially interesting chemical and physical properties, and are not easily accessible by other methods.
