Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In previous field and greenhouse plant bioassays, Tween-80 has been used (0.04%) as a wetting agent to enhance antagonist colonization of wheat heads. Tween-80 has occasionally influenced Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) severity. In current green house bioassays, Tween-80 did not influence the pathogen or the antagonist efficacy (P = 0.05). Culture age of Bacillus subtilus AS 43.3 did not influence biocontrol efficacy. Cells resuspended in culture supernatant were more effective than cells resuspended in buffer regardless of culture age (P = 0.0001). Antagonists B. subtilus OH 131.1, Cryptococcus sp. OH 181.1, and C. nodaensis OH 182.9 were sprayed individually or in combination onto flowering wheat heads. All antagonists decreased disease severity, as did all antagonist combinations (P = 0.05). OH 182.9 reduced disease severity to a greater extent alone than when combined with OH 181.1 (P = 0.05).
