Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The book entitled, Conservation Tillage and Cropping Innovation: Constructing the New Culture of Agriculture, was reviewed initially for an "author meets the critics" panel discussion at the 2001 Annual Rural Sociology meetings in Albuquerque, N.M. Our three perspectives were then combined for this review. The authors, Drs. Coughenour and Chamala, presented their detailed research in a unique way by putting real people and their perspectives into a sociological study. Historical records, existing research, comparisons of conservation tillage development in the U.S. and Australia, statistical data, and case studies are blended in a way that makes the book very interesting for a wide variety of potential readers. We recommend that people read the book to gain an understanding and explanation of the innovative changes that occurred during the last 50 years of agriculture.
