Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A joint project between NRCS and ARS was initiated in 1998 to combine two existing technologies, the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) and the Simulation of Production and Utilization of Rangelands (SPUR) into a "state-of-the-art" ecosystem model (SPUR 2000). Advances to SPUR 2000 include incorporation of the infiltration and runoff components of WEPP and utilizing the plant growth, economics, livestock growth and management attributes of SPUR 2.4. SPUR 2000 is unique in that it addresses multiple-species communities. The model can simulate responses to various management treatments and changing plant composition and their effects on hydrological processes. The SPUR-2000 WEB site demonstration provides three basic functions: model description, model applications, and model demonstration. The model description function allows the user to see how the model is structured, the status of upgrades, accomplishments of the SPUR-2000 development ream, and references. The model applications section shows the types of applications for which SPUR-2000 can be used. The demonstration interface allows the user to make selections about climate, soil type, vegetation, and management options for an ecological site. After running the model, hydrologic water budgets, the impact of management, and carbon balance for the ecological site can be assessed.
