Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Little Washita Watershed is a USDA Agricultural Research Service research facility located near Chickasha, OK. It has been the focus of soil moisture remote sensing research for over two decades. This was the result of its benign vegetation conditions for a wide range of remote sensing techniques and its large variations in surface moisture resulting from strong forcings for drying and convective storms. Both passive and active microwave remote sensing methods were established and demonstrated in the watershed. Of the many activities, some of the most significant were a series of baseline aircraft experiments between 1978 and 1980, the contributions to the development and verification of synthetic aperture radiometry in the early 1990s, the multi-parameter Space Shuttle radar experiments in 1994, and its role in the Southern Great Plains experiments in 1997 and 1999. The results of this research has had a significant impact ton the acceptance of microwave remote sensing as a soil moisture mapping tool.
