Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Late blight, Phytophthora infestans, re-emerged as a significant threat to potato and tomato production during recent years. From a diploid hybrid Solanum phureja x S. stenotomum population, resistant and susceptible clones were selected and crossed resulting in 240 F1 progeny. Based on differences of susceptibility under lab conditions, 37 clones from the 240 F1 progeny were selected to examine tuber blight. These clones, along with the two parental lines and one cultivar, were evaluated in a field trial using a randomized complete block design with two replications in 1999. The foliage of spreader rows were inoculated with a mixture of three isolates of P. infestans, clonal lineage US-8. The tubers were hand harvested and visually assessed for late blight incidence and severity. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications and repeated three times. The incidence and severity of tuber blight differed significantly among the clones. The incidence ranged from 3-80% (field), 8-90% (laboratory) and severity ranged from 0-100% (field), 0-53% (laboratory). We identified several clones with characteristics of high resistance to late blight which could be used in breeding programs.
