Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection of cattle results in a chronic granulomatous enteritis. Clinical disease is preceded by a lengthy subclinical infection. In this study, simultaneous PKH2 and surface phenotypic labeled peripheral blood lymphocytes were used to compare responses of control, subclinically, and clinically infected animals. B cells from animals with subclinical paratuberculosis responded well to stimulation with M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. B cells from controls and clinically infected anmals did not respond to antigen stimulation although responses to Concanavalin A mitogen stimulation were normal. Animals with clinical disease also had higher percentages of B cells than either controls or subclinically infected animals.
