Interpretive Summary: Dolichopodid flies are primarily predators, some of which are beneficial to agriculture because they prey on bark beetle larvae and other noxious insects. This paper reports the introduction of a genus and species (Conchopus borealis) that previously did not occur in the USA. It has been detected in Alabama and California, and is almost certainly established in the latter state because of the numbers that have been collected. This information is of value to regulators, especially APHIS, who need to be informed of insect introductions.

Technical Abstract: A Japanese marine shore dolichopodid, Conchopus borealis Takagi, is recorded from California and Alabama, USA, the first record of this genusf from the New World. The male ventral lobe of this species is illustrated for specimens from the USA and seven localities in Japan. No geographical variation was detected and it is considered that the Nearctic populationso of this species were recently introduced from Japan through commerce.
