Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: After a recent reevaluation, the three major families of ascomycetous Hypocreales include 56 teleomorph genera many of which correlate with anamorph genera. Most of the 20 genera in the Nectriaceae exhibit an equivalence in sexual and asexual characteristics. With exceptions the asexual states of the 26 genera in the Bionectriaceae are nondescript acremonium-like and are not useful for defining genera in this family. The Hypocreaceae consist primarily of the genus Hypocrea with Trichoderma anamorphs and Hypomyces having a diverse array of anamorphs. A few anomalous species allied with Hypocrea have verticillium-like or acremonium-like anamorphs; in these cases the sexual state is often as atypical as the anamorph. Groups of species within Hypomyces correspond with anamorph and biological characteristics, particularly host. Within the hypocrealean lineages, monophyletic genera are emerging that encompass both sexual and asexual fungi.
