Interpretive Summary: The Solinviviridae is a new family of RNA viruses (since 2017) discovered by scientists at the USDA-ARS Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE, Gainesville, FL). Members of this virus family are significant to the agricultural community because they are being investigated for use as natural enemies of invasive ant species (including fire ants and crazy ants). This invited book chapter summarizes the up-to-date information on the biology of this group of viruses.

Technical Abstract: The Solinviviridae is a new virus family possessing non-segmented, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genomes of 10-11 kilobases. This is a highly divergent group exhibiting phylogenetic, genome, and replication characteristics with aspects that are both picornavirus- and calicivirus-like. There are two genera that comprise the family, each currently containing a single species, Invictavirus (Solenopsis invicta virus 3) and Nyfulvavirus (Nylanderia fulva virus 1).
