Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: "Pipe Corn, Basis of the Barnyard Briar" is a revised chapter in the 2nd edition of a book entitled "Specialty Corns" edited by A.R. Hallauer. Included are a review of the history of pipe corn and the production of corn cob pipes in Missouri, cob production and processing, breeding of pipe corn hybrids, and the inbred lines and hybrids released and used for commercial production. This 2nd edition includes comparison of a new double-cross hybrid (Mo Pipe DX) with Mo Pipe 65 (formerly the sole commercial hybrid grown) under irrigated and dryland conditions at four plant densities. Results from the irrigated trial data in 1994 showed that at 30,890 plants/ha (12,500 plants/acre), Mo Pipe DX relative to Mo Pipe 65 had a 17% yield increase, a 9% cob diameter increase, a 61% splitting resistance increase, and a 31% increase in the total number of full-size bowls. Mo Pipe DX has been grown as a significant part of the total production since about 1994. Approximately 2 million pipes are made annually today. Corn cob pipes have sold from $0.29 to over $20 each for wholly hand-made show pipes. The majority of corn cob pipes sell today for less than $3.
