Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase plays an important role in the conversion of various hemicellulosic substrates for the subsequent production of fuel alcohol, value-added chemicals, and efficient utilization of animal feed. Xylanases, in conjunction with arabinofuranosidase and other accessory enzymes, act synergistically to degrade hemicellulose to fermentable sugars. We have found a novel thermostable arabinofuranosidase produced by Aureobasidium pullulans, a yeast-like fungus that was optimally active at 75 deg C and pH 4.5. The enzyme readily hydrolyzed arabinan and debranched arabinan and various arabinoxylans. Enzyme production was most induced by arabinose. The current state of research and development on arabinofuranosidase and its role in biotechnology will be reviewed.
