Interpretive Summary: Soybean germplasm line D95-5246 was released in October, 1998 for use as a parent to develop high yielding multiple pest resistant varieties. It is highly resistant to the pathogen causing the disease phytophthora rot, and is resistant to races 3 and 14 of the soybean cyst nematode. D95-5246 is of Maturity Group V, and was developed by backcrossing to transfer the gene econtrolling resistance to phytophthora rot into Bedford. Therefore, it is very similar to its recurrent parent, Bedford, for all observable traits. In 1996 and 1997, when grown on clay soil at Stoneville, MS, the seed yield of D95-5246 was significantly higher than the seed yield of Bedford.

Technical Abstract: Soybean germplasm line D95-5246 was released in October, 1998 to provide private and public soybean breeders with a potential parent to develop high yielding multiple pest resistant cultivars. The line D95-5246 was developed by backcrossing for five cycles to transfer the gene Rps 3-a into a Bedford genetic background. Progeny from each backcrossing cycle were inoculated with races 2 and 7 of phytophthora sojae to identify a uniforml resistant F3 line to use as a pollen parent in the next crossing cycle. After five backcrosses, F3 lines were evaluated for resistance to phytophthora rot and to races 3 and 14 of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). The F3 line that became D95-5246 had the same level of resistance to SCN races 3 and 14 as Bedford. D95-5246 is of Group V maturity and is very similar to its recurrent parent Bedford for all other observable traits. In a replicated yield test on clay soil at Stoneville, MS in 1996, D95-5246 6yielded 3915 kg ha**-1, compared to 3370 kg ha**-1 for Bedford. In 1997, seed yields were 4083 kg ha**-1 for D95-5246 and 3249 kg ha**-1 for Bedford.
