Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Two general structural possibilities exist for derivatizing fatty compounds in order to obtain derivatives facilitating mass spectral structure determination. These are derivatization at the carboxyl moiety or directly in the fatty acid chain at the site of the functional group whose position is to be determined. This article briefly reviews two methods/experimental procedures for each kind of derivatization. They are formation of 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives and picolinyl esters for derivatization at the carboxyl moiety, as well as dimethyl disulfide and 4-methyl- 1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione derivatives. These methods are suitable for analyzing double bond positions in the chain.
