Technical Abstract: A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effect of eight drift retardants on the spray pattern of Roundup Ultra as compared to the spray pattern of water and of Roundup alone. Applications were made similar to field applications where Roundup Ultra was applied with a tractor-mounted sprayer at the rate of 0.5 lb. ai in 10 gpa at 40 to 42 psi. Spray patterns sfor each mixture were determined using three different spray tips-Brass Te Jet 110015, Extended Range Tee Jet 110015VS, and Turbo Tee Jet 110015. Spray patterns for each nozzle were similar with water alone and with water plus Roundup Ultra, both alone and mixed with most of the drift retardants in the study. The brass Tee Jet nozzle gave a spray width of 33 inches except for spray widths of 23 inches with HM9622A and HM9733 and 18 inches with HM9717. The Extended Range Tee Jet gave a spray width of 38 inches with water alone and with water plus Roundup Ultra alone and mixed with HM9718 and HM9745. The spray width was increased to 43 inches with the addition of HM9206 and HM9675 and decreased to 33 inches with HM9236, HM9622A, and HM9733, and to 23 inches with HM9717. The Turbo Tee Jet gave a spray width of 43 inches with water alone and all spray mixtures except for 38 inches with HM9236 and HM9622A and 23 inches with HM9717. When sprayed five consecutive times through each tip, the spray patterns remained constant for each mixture except for increased spray widths of 5, 5, and 10 inches with HM9622A, and 10, 15, and 20 inches with HM9717 when applied with the Brass Tee Jet 110015, Extended Range Tee Jet 110015VS, and Turbo Tee Jet 110015, respectively.
