'White Regal' is a new sweetpotato cultivar developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. This cultivar has cream-colored flesh and an attractive scarlet skin. When baked, it is bland and starchy with low sweetness. 'White Regal' produces high yields of attractive storage roots. It holds up well under long-term storage. It can be grown with little or no pesticides because it is resistant to many diseases, weeds, soil insects, and other pests. 'White Regal' bakes well as a dry-fleshed type and shows potential for processed products like sweetpotato french fries. Technical Abstract: The sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] cultivar 'White Regal' was developed jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. The new cultivar is a cream-fleshed, bland type with an attractive scarlet-colored skin. 'White Regal' produces excellent yields of high quality storage roots, has a high level of resistance to diseases and insect pests, and is allelopathic to some weed species. 'White Regal' bakes well as a dry-fleshed type and shows potential for processed products like sweetpotato french fries. |
