Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The use of nonisotopic nucleic acid labeling and detection systems provides numerous advantages over techniques performed with radioactively labeled probes. However, when performing chemiluminescent detection of digoxigenin-labeled probes, background exposure sometimes occurs on the X-ray film that obscures or interferes with the interpretation of results. The background is apparently due to sparks that are generated from the discharge of static electricity when the film is removed from the surface of the plastic pouch containing the membrane used for blotting. This report describes the use of an anti-static device, originally intended for the elimination of static electricity from the surface of vinyl LP record albums, to eliminate static-induced background from X-ray film.
