Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs) were isolated from 3 soils with composts, animal manure, municipal sewage sludge, and sweet corn residue. Amendments were applied at various levels. HAs and FAs were also isolated from soil controls and from each type of amendment. Elemental analysis data show significant differences between both soil HAs, and FAs, as well as the HA-like and FA-like substances isolated from the amendments. Minor differences were observed for the amended-soil HAs and FAs. Fluorescence spectra of amendment and amended-soil HAs and FAs showed increased RFI values compared with control soils. FT-IR spectra changed slightly according to soil type. Marked changes, however, were observed after amendment application. C-13 NMR spectra for both HAs and FAs showed expected differences. Effects of waste amendments on soil properties will be discussed.
