Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Saliva of two homopterans (Empoasca fabae and Empoasca abrupta), one phytophagous heteropteran (Lygus hesperus), and one entomophagous heteropteran (Podisus maculiventris) were collected after feeding on different hosts. The proteins in the saliva were separated by size using electrophoretic techniques under denaturing conditions. Differences occurred in the number and concentrations of salivary proteins from phytophagous hemipterans when fed on plant hosts versus artificial diet. In contrast, there was little variation in the salivary proteins for entomophagous hemipterans, when fed on either an insect host or on a artificial diet.
