Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea virus is a ubiquitous viral pathogen of cattle. The virus contains a single strand of positive sense RNA that is surrounded by an icosahedral nucleocapsid and a lipid envelope. Acute BVD and mucosal disease are two diseases induced by the virus. These diseases are characterized by fever, diarrhea, mucosal ulcerations, and decreased white blood cell counts. Fetal infection during the first four months of pregnancy may lead to persistent infection. Control of BVD is accomplished by vaccination, and by identification and elimination of persistently infected cattle.
