Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Manure management strategies are being researched and recommended that minimize negative environmental impacts from nitrogen. These strategies are influenced by existing or proposed regulations, the characteristics of the manure, and environmental knowledge/perceptions of the producers. A survey of state manure researchers and specialists was conducted to address show state regulations/permitting processes influence research projects regarding land application of manure and implementation of manure management plans by the producers. Comparisons of management strategies for different livestock species will be discussed. Also, various progressive strategies will be summarized and the contrast between the research strategies and the recommended outreach strategies will be addressed.
