Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Surface configuration can affect the movement of soil water and solutes. TDR measurement of soil water content at 0.5 h intervals following natural rainfall events was used to determine the pattern of infiltration and soil water recharge for uncropped row and furrow positions on loessial and glacial-till soils in long-term ridge-tillage fields. Movement of Br- and fluorinated benzoate tracers was measured by periodic soil sampling. Solute leaching was greater under the furrow compared to the ridge, as a result of water movement patterns. Water infiltrated primarily in furrows and moved laterally to row positions minimizing downward movement under the row. Water and solute movement was simulated using the two-dimensional model, SWMS_2D. Measured and simulated soil water contents and solute concentrations are compared.
