Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The weevil, Ischnopterapion (Chlorapion) virens Herbst, a pest of clover, Trifolium spp. in Europe has been detected in four NE states, PA, NJ, DE, and NY in 1994-98, but is probably even more widely distributed. Its mode of entry into North America is unknown, but it is reasonable to assume it arrived associated with clover plant material. To date, most adults have been taken from white clover, but recently adults have also been collected from red clover. Larvae were found tunneling within stolons of white clover in May at the Stricker Farm in Berks County. We also located larvae inside stems just above the crown of red clover. USDA-APHIS, PDA, and other state agencies plan to survey for adults to determine geographic distribution in the NE. We also plan to dig clover plants and examine roots and stolons for larvae, and estimate density of adults by vacuum sampling.
