However, many of the OC pesticides targeted, such as DDT and chlordane, have been banned for use in the U.S. and other countries for many years. Although OC compounds are more persistent and more likely to bioconcentrate in oysters, many currently used pesticides are not being monitored, in part due to the polarity limitations of the analytical methods. A method of analysis for more than 60 diverse pesticides in oyster tissue was developed using liquid-based extraction, solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis with ion-trap detection (ITD) or negative chemical ionization (NCI) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode to achieve low limits of detection. This approach was also tested for sediment samples, and a similar method of analysis was performed dfor river water samples extracted using a polymer-based SPE cartridge. Recoveries were between 80-110% for nearly all pesticides and RSD were typically less than 10%. Limits of detection (LOD) were < 10 ng/L for GC/ITD analysis. |
