Interpretive Summary: An overview of the laboratory assessment of status of mineral elements is described. The chemistry, functions, clinical significance, deficiency signs, and laboratory assessment of status are discussed for the mineral elements of clinical or potential clinical concern. These include calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, chromium, selenium and fluoride. The review indicates numerous clinical situations where most of the listed trace and ultratrace elements are of practical nutritional importance. Cardiovascular disease, growth retardation, hypogonadism, dermatitis, impaired glucose tolerance and various bone abnormalities are but a few of the clinical abnormalities attributed to inadequate status of various essential trace and ultratrace minerals.
