Technical Abstract: Investigation of resistance to Phytophthora infestans in 2x(1EBN) wild potato germplasm included individuals from Solanum cardiophyllum subsp. cardiophyllum (cph) and Solanum pinnatisectum (pnt). Replicated detached leaf tests using the P. infestans isolate MSU 96 (US-8 A2) detected susceptible and resistant individuals within both species. Many resistant reactions were characterized by the complete absence of any symptoms or signs of P. infestans infection. Reciprocal interspecific crosses were attempted and resulted in unilateral production of seed from pnt x cph pollinations. Detached leaf tests of F1 progeny from R x R, R x S and RS x S crosses revealed susceptible, resistant and intermediate phenotypes. Hybridizations using tomato genomic clones have identified polymorphisms within and among PIs and species, suggesting future analysis could identify markers associated with late blight resistance in a segregating diploid family.
