Interpretive Summary: Knowledge of the pedigree of potato varieties helps to evaluate the impact of various genotypes on progress in potato breeding and helps to choose the right parents for use in breeding programs. Modern potato breeding developed in parallel in North America and Europe in the second half of the XIXth century, and there was much exchange of varieties between both continents. Therefore, it was felt desirable to consider jointly potato varieties bred in these areas. We attempted to collect information from all European countries breeding potatoes, including Russia. The following information was collected for each variety: the breeder, the year of release, countries in which it is cultivated at present and the pedigree as completely as possible. Not considered are varieties which are not cultivated at present and which do not appear in the pedigree of varieties cultivated at present. To collect information, we attempted to utilize scattered published data and to obtain direct information from breeders and from institutions preparing parental lines for potato breeding. This handbook will be of use to potato breeders and the potato industry.

Technical Abstract: We have compiled a list of the pedigrees of European and North American potato varieties. In North America the pedigrees of potato varieties has been computerized, and in addition the pedigrees of new varieties are published in the American Potato Journal. In Europe varieties are often released without publishing information on their pedigree. We compiled this list from published data and from information obtained from potato breeders and institutions preparing parental lines for potato breeding.
