Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: BVDV consists of two recognized biotypes, noncytopathic and cytopathic, based on the cytopathic effect produced in cell culture. In BVDV 2, the major difference between the two biotypes is the presence in cytopathic strains of an in-frame recombination between a cellular mRNA and the BVDV genomic RNA. This recombination occurs in the NS2/3 region resulting in the proteolytic cleavage of NS2/3 to the NS2 and NS3 polypeptides. PCR amplification using primers designed with the sequence of the genomic insert in BVDV strain 125c yielded multiple bands from uninfected cellular RNA isolated from a number of tissues. Sequences derived from these bands showed altered processing. Northern blot analysis shows a difference in expression of this gene between infected and noninfected cells. Cloning and sequencing of a full length bovine cDNA clone shows this transcript encodes a DNA J protein, the regulatory protein of a molecular chaperone complex which may be involved in transmembrane transport.
