Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This year's report was generated using data from ten locations. Bottineau (North Dakota) was added as a test site and should be a valuable addition to the nursery. The nursery was grown in three Canadian locations after a one-year hiatus due to karnal bunt related import restrictions. Data from the Brandon, Manitoba and Nebraska nurseries were not usable. No data were submitted from Michigan. Observation nurseries were grown at Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Aberdeen, Idaho. The reader is referred to the "Nursery Conditions" section immediately following this summary for other comments concerning specific locations. The average planting date of May 11 was the latest ever. Planting has been very late for each of the past three years. Heading date (7-2) was two days earlier than last year, but still relatively late. Average yield (4046 kg/ha or 75 bu/a) was much better than that of last year. Entries with the best yields were M95, 6B94-7378, SM94170, M94, and M81. Five stations reported test weight; the average of 63.1 kg/hl was the best since 1979. The four two-row barleys from North Dakota had the greatest test weights (2ND15596 was best). Robust, MNS85, and ND15483 had the greatest test weights of the six-row barleys. The lack of lodging data from last year remains a problem and will result in slightly skewed 10 year averages. Lodging data were reported from four locations this year. Average lodging was 28%; average plant height was 77.4 cm. Shortest entries were 6B94-7012, 6B88-3213, Stander, M83, and M94. Those with the least amount of lodging were ND15477, 6B88-3213, Stander, 6B94-7012, M83, and ND15403. Data on kernel plumpness and disease ratings appear at the end of the report.
