Technical Abstract: Asclepias syriaca is a promising new crop whose fiber is being marketed by the Natural Fibers Corporation in Nebraska, but whose seed oil is underutilized. This oil contains significant amount of C18 delta 9 (oleic acid). Based upon recent analyses, the commercial seed oil content of milkweed ranges from 22.2% to 26.2%. Peroxide values and the tocopherol content of the oils were dependent on the handling and storage conditions of the oil after extraction. Previous analyses of other species and samples collected from the wild will also be presented.
