Selected newly generated cell lines were evaluated for the production of 5 baculoviruses: alfalfa looper virus (AcMNPV), velvetbean caterpillar virus (AgMNPV), bollworm virus (HzSNPV), diamondback moth virus (PxMNPV), and beet armyworm virus (SeMNPV). Extracellular virus titers (ECV) and occlusion body (OB) production levels were determined. For AcMNPV production, 28 new lines were evaluated. Three of these lines produced high ECV titers (> or equal to 10*7 TCID-50/ml) and 11 produced OBs. For AgMNPV, 6 new lines were tested, 5 produced high ECV titers and all produced OBs. For HzSNPV, 7 new lines were tested, 2 produced only moderate ECV levels (10*6 TCID-50/ml) and none generated OBs. For PxMNPV, 14 new lines were tested, 8 generated high ECV levels and 12 produced OBs. For SeMNPV, 2 isolates were tested in 3 new cell lines. All of these line produced moderate to high ECV titers (10*6 to 10*7 TCID-50/ml) of one isolate and OB of both isolates. Thus, we found that numerous newly established cell lines were good baculovirus producers. These data will be used by researchers in government, academia and industry for selecting cell lines for the mass production of baculoviruses. |
