Technical Abstract: In 1990, a Water Quality Initiative project began in the Midwest to understand the impacts of farming practices on water quality. This project was conducted at 10 sites within 8 states and involved USDA, USGS, EPA, and a number of state and local agencies to understand the dynamics of pesticide and nitrate-nitrogen movement under different tillage systems, crop rotations, application methods, soils, and climates. These research projects have helped define the role of agriculture in nonpoint source pollution and have led to the development of best management practices that are being transferred to producers. These practices have both a positive economical and environmental impact. Since the inception, the number of projects has expanded to include 5 more states. This project has been unique not only from the large number of agencies and disciplines involved throughout the study but also the ability to deliver science-based information to producers and policy-makers.
