Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A total of 500 new Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) DNA markers were developed in soybean. The SSRs along with RFLP and RAPD markers were mapped in three soybean mapping populations: the USDA/Iowa St. Glycine max x G. soja population, the Univ. of Utah Minsoy x Noir 1 RIL population, and the Univ. of Nebraska Clark x Harosoy population. The primary objectives of this research were to define a consensus linkage map of soybean that contained 20 linkage groups and to provide a large number of highly polymorphic "landmark markers" that would permit the easy identification of homologous linkage groups in other soybean molecular genetic maps and in QTL mapping studies. The development and mapping of more than 500, mostly trinucleotide, SSR markers was accomplished. Because three mapping populations were employed, it was possible to coalesce small linkage groups in one map by homology with larger groups in another. The resulting map now has the anticipated 20 linkage groups.
