Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Our research is aimed at further defining the genetic map of swine chromosome 6 by defining the exact positions of microsatellite markers on this chromosome. Microsatellites are repetitive areas in the genome used as genetic reference points along the chromosome. We are interested in chromosome 6 because it contains the gene responsible for Porcine Stress Syndrome (PSS). Animals with PSS exhibit inferior meat quality and will die suddenly in response to stress. This region of chromosome 6 is of further importance because it may also contain beneficial carcass trait genes. Our early efforts were aimed at isolating new microsatellite markers on chromosome 6. This manuscript reports the results of more detailed mapping analyses performed with these markers, along with pre-existing chromosome 6 framework markers, on the full panel of animals in the University of Illiois swine reference family. This yielded the new comprehensive Beltsville/Univ. of Minnesota swine chromosome 6 linkage map This map represents a more comprehensive and accurate linkage map of chromosome 6 than previous maps. These markers can now be used to follow their respective regions of the chromosome throughout a pedigree and provide clues to the presence of any important genes in that area. The addition of more microsatellitles to the swine linkage map will therefore be helpful in searching regions of chromosome 6, such as the one containing the gene responsible for PSS, for the presence of beneficial carcass trait genes. These studies should ultimately lead to leaner, healthier pigs and to novel breeding strategies to produce them.
Technical Abstract: This report presents a comprehensive genetic linkage map of swine chromosome 6 that contains 24 microsatellite markers derived from chromosome 6-enriched libraries, four microsatellite markers isolated by SINE-PCR and 22 microsatellite and RFLP markers previously assigned on other swine chromosome 6 linkage maps. These markers have all been genotyped on the University of Illinois swine reference population; this includes six markers not previously mapped on this family. The resulting 206.0 cM sex-averaged chromosome 6 linkage map provides a comprehensive linkage map of this swine chromosome that will be useful in identifying important QTL associated with improved carcass traits and meat quality.
