Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of rimsulfuron and thifensulfuron on corn hybrids ranging from 85-105 day relative maturity. This study was conducted at Morris, MN on a McIntosh silt loam soil containing 4.1% OM, pH 8.3 and soil test P and K levels of 20 and 344 lb/A, respectively. A randomized complete block design with a split plot arrangement of treatments with four replications and a plot size of 10x30 ft was used. All herbicide treatments were applied with a tractor-mounted sprayer delivering 20 gpa at a pressure of 40 psi. The sprayer was equipped with a 8002 flat-fan nozzle spaced 15 inches apart on the boom. Application of these postemergence herbicides to corn in the 4-inch growth stage caused chlorosis and mild stunting in Pioneer 3917 when evaluated 18 and 29 days after treatment compared to the non-treated control for this hybrid. The vigor of Pioneer 3917 was reduced by approximately 15% on these dates where this herbicide was applied. None of the other hybrids exhibited any symptom from this herbicide treatment. Plant populations were not affected by herbicide treatment for any hybrid. Postemergence application applied to Pioneer 3917 delayed tasseling, pollen shed, and silking by 1 day compared to the non-treated check for this hybrid. Grain moisture at harvest was 1.2 percentage points higher where postemergence was applied to Pioneer 3917 compared to the non-treated control for this hybrid, indicating that some delay in maturity occurred. None of the other hybrids exhibited a response for these parameters. Grain yields were not influenced by postemergence application for any hybrid.
